John Robert "J.R." Clifford

J.R. Clifford

John Robert “J.R.” Clifford (1848-1933) was born on a farm in what is now Grant County. Clifford was a Civil War soldier, educator, newspaper owner, lawyer, and political activist for African-American rights, advancements, and liberties. His legal victories included the 1892 West Virginia Supreme Court ruling that colored schools must have the same term and teacher pay as white schools.
