The State Seal

The Great Seal of West Virginia was adopted by the Legislature on September 26, 1863. A farmer stands on the left and a miner to the right of a large rock inscribed with the date June 20, 1863, the day West Virginia became a state. The state motto “Montani Semper Liberi” is Latin and means “Mountaineers are Always Free.”
